12. September 1977: Steve Biko zu Tode gefoltert

In der Folgezeit wurde Biko mehrfach verhaftet, zuletzt am 18. August 1977 außerhalb von King William’s Town, als die Sicherheitspolizei ihn aufgriff und wegen Verletzung seiner Auflagen verhaftete. Sie internierte ihn in einem Gefängnis in der nahegelegenen Stadt Port Elizabeth. Während der anschließenden Verhöre im „Police-Room 6-1-9“ wurden ihm durch Foltermaßnahmen schwere Kopfverletzungen zugefügt.
Am 11. September wurde Biko nackt und bewusstlos in einem Polizeiwagen nach Pretoria transportiert. Dort erlag er in der folgenden Nacht seinen Verletzungen im Gefängniskrankenhaus. Am 13. September 1977 wurde sein Tod bekannt gegeben. Justizminister James Kruger behauptete zunächst, der Tod sei Folge eines Hungerstreiks. Eine gerichtlich angeordnete Untersuchung im November 1977 zeigte jedoch, dass Biko an den Folgen seiner Verletzungen gestorben war, die ihm in Port Elizabeth zugefügt worden waren. Zu einer Anklage wegen Mordes oder Totschlags kam es gleichwohl nicht.
